About Us

The Nanaimo Region John Howard Society is one of 61 affiliated John Howard Societies across Canada. Like all John Howard Societies, the Nanaimo Region is a registered charitable organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Named after the 17th Century prison reformer, John Howard, we collectively share a mission of responding in effective, just and humane ways to the causes and consequences of crime. Through smart justice initiatives we foster a safe and supported community. Nanaimo’s Society began in 1958 when a group of volunteers began to tackle issues important to the community and to the Criminal Justice System. This area Council served our community as part of the Vancouver Island John Howard Society until 1989 when the Nanaimo Region John Howard Society was incorporated. The Society is affiliated with both the John Howard Society of British Columbia (8 BC affiliates), and the John Howard Society of Canada. The Society is ever-evolving to keep up with present day needs of clients and the community. Our programs are innovative and evidence-based to promote responsible and accountable behaviours. We house the homeless, find long-term work for the under-employed, mentor youth through restorative practices, offer affordable addiction treatment, and even manage Nanaimo’s community emergency dental clinic. We are internationally recognized for Therapeutic Community addiction treatment. We contribute to the national development of Restorative Justice as an emerging alternative justice process.
